Le mwbaIridacee (mwbqIridaceae mwbgmwbwJuss., mwca1789) sono una mwcqfamiglia di mwcgpiante erbacee mwcwmonocotiledoni dell'mwdaordine mwdqAsparagales comprendente circa mwdg1 800 specie in 69 genericite-ref-powo-1-0[1]cite-ref-apgiv-2-0[2]. La famiglia è originaria delle mwfwregioni tropicali dell'mwgaAfrica meridionale e dell'mwgqAmerica centrale e mwggmeridionale, ma è diffusa anche nelle mwgwregioni temperate. In mwhaItalia crescono spontanee una cinquantina di specie comprese in cinque generi.

Descrizione
Le Iridacee sono mwiwpiante erbacee mwjaperenni dotate di mwjqrizomi, mwjgbulbi o mwjwbulbo-tuberi, con mwkafusti semplici o mwkqramificati. Le mwkgfoglie sono lineari o appuntite all'estremità, inguainanti, a margine intero, parallelinervie.
I mwlafiori sono vistosi, avvolti da giovani in una spata con 2 o più mwlqbrattee, con mwlgperigonio a 6 mwlwtepali saldati nella parte inferiore o formanti un tubo più o meno lungo allargato nella parte terminale. L'mwmaovario è costituito da tre logge contenenti molti ovuli. I fiori sono talvolta solitari (ad esempio nel genere mwmqmwmgCrocus) o, più di frequente, raccolti in mwmwinfiorescenze terminali, a forma di mwnaspighe, mwnqracemi, o mwngcime, mwnwfrutti a capsula con molti mwoasemi solitamente di forma allungata. Ma il carattere fondamentale che distingue le Iridacee dalle affini Amaryllidacee è la presenza di soli 3 stami, contro 6 nella seconda famiglia.
Tassonomia
Il mwvwsistema Cronquist considerava tradizionalmente le Iridacee all'interno dell'mwwaordine mwwqLilialescite-ref-stevenson-e-loconte-1995-8-0[8]cite-ref-chase-et-al-1995b-9-0[9], mentre la moderna classificazione filogenetica le colloca nell'ordine mwygAsparagales.cite-ref-apgiv-2-1[2]
